Basic university classroom education is essential to the effectiveness and equity of student-centered approaches, just as rigorous phonics instruction is essential for balanced literacy’s more engaging ways. College does not magically close the achievement gap. Conducting a seminar with the idea that all students can engage equally in discussion hurts those who believe their lack of experience or knowledge prevents them from engaging and those who lose out on hearing from their peers. Professors may arrange active learning by adding course material—critical theory, mundane historical fact, or literal vocabulary—and actively promoting student interaction (even if students are geometry dash subzero incorrect).
